About the Author...

Melissa Davis has been an elementary school teacher for seven years, and she is currently enrolled in Fayetteville State University working towards her Master’s Degree in School Administration. Growing up, Melissa’s father was in the Army, and they moved often. She understands the challenges and anxiety associated with relocation from a child’s point of view. As a teacher and advocate of literacy, Melissa also understands the power of a good book. Home is Where the Army Sends You – Fort Bragg, North Carolina is just the first in a series of books Melissa is writing. The following books in this series will cover each of the Army’s bases. They will contain the same characters and light-hearted, relevant information targeted for our military children.

Meet the Characters...

Sgt. Applebottom...

Sgt. Applebottom is a soldier in the United States Army. He is proud to serve his country, and he is determined to provide a great life for his family. Sgt. Applebottom always brings home a clue about his new duty station on the day he receives orders. He researches the area where his family will be living, and is always able to tell his children about the things they will love to do there. Sgt. Applebottom is determined to make relocation a positive experience for his children. He believes that the Army gives him and his family a wonderful opportunity to explore the world, one base at a time. Melissa Davis created this character to honor her father who really did make her life as a military child a rewarding and exciting experience.

Mrs. Applebottom...

Mrs. Applebottom is an Army wife and mother. She loves taking care of her home and children. Mrs. Applebottom embraces the opportunities that come with being married to a soldier. She always reminds her children that no matter where they move, their family stays the same. Mrs. Applebottom loves creating traditions and collecting keepsakes. Her positive attitude about relocation is contagious to her children. Melissa Davis created this character in honor of her mother who taught her family values and continues to provide her encouragement and strength on a daily basis.

Kristy Applebottom...

Kristy is in the 5th grade. She loves being the daughter of a soldier, but she gets nervous every time her father receives orders to a new base. Kristy realizes that relocation means leaving friends, teachers, and familiarity behind, but she always gets excited once her father tells her about the things she will be able to do when they arrive at their new location. Melissa Davis created this character to represent herself as a child. She decided to name the character Kristy because that was the name of her childhood doll that moved everywhere with her.

Steven Applebottom...

Steven is in the 2nd grade. He enjoys outdoor activities and playing games with his friends and family. Steven considers relocation an exciting adventure, and he loves it when his father receives orders to a new Army base. Steven has a great sense of humor. His grand ideas and silly questions keep his family members laughing during what would normally be a tense time. Melissa Davis has a younger brother, and this character was created in honor of him.

The book was designed to get children in military families excited about moving to new places. Parents, teachers, counselors and others can use Home is Where the Army Sends You as a tool to help children of military families visualize exactly where they are going, thereby relieving some of the anxiety associated with relocation. Children who have recently arrived at Fort Bragg will find this book useful as they search for ways to have fun around the city. Every person who is in contact with a military child should consider the possible uses of Home is Where the Army Sends You.
